M.Ed. and Initial Teaching License in Elementary Education with a focus on Dual Language and Immersion


Overview

This two-year, graduate-level initial teaching license teacher preparation program will give you the experience, knowledge, and skills you need to teach in both dual language and immersion and single-language elementary school classrooms.

Dual language immersion expertise is a high-needs area in Minnesota. The Minnesota Advocates for Immersion Network estimates that more than 15,000 students in Minnesota learn their subject matter in a non-English language, including Hmong, Chinese, Spanish, Korean, German, French, and more.

Is this program right for you?

This program is designed for individuals who have an undergraduate degree including:

  • Current K-6 dual language and immersion teachers on a community expert or other teacher license waiver
  • Bilingual education assistants or paraprofessionals
  • Bilingual professionals desiring to be a teacher
  • Bilingual international students

This is an initial licensure program designed for those needing their first license only.

Master of Education

This program includes two components: initial licensure to be an elementary school (K-6) teacher in Minnesota and a Master of Education degree.

Combining an M.Ed. with your teaching license offers the following advantages:

  • Teachers with a master's degree are regarded as experts in their field, making you a more competitive job candidate with an M.Ed.
  • Teachers who have a master's degree will see a roughly $7,000 annual salary increase [Teacher.org]
  • Though the salary increase with a master's degree will vary by district and state, Minnesota teachers are on the higher end of the payscale.
  • Once a teacher is employed, there is much more mobility that comes with a master's degree. Teachers with advanced degrees can be promoted to school administration positions and can become mentors to other teachers based upon their graduate training.

Timeline for the June 2017 cohort (2 years)

  • Summer 2018: 2 months intensive coursework and 6 week practicum
  • Fall 2018 - Spring 2019: Student teaching, Saturday and online coursework

*Practicing DLI teachers on a waiver student teach in their own classrooms

*Candidates can interview to be teachers following student teaching

  • Summer 2019: 4-6 weeks coursework
  • Fall 2019 - Spring 2020: Saturday and online coursework

Curriculum

Infused throughout the program is the dual language and immersion-specific content including:

  • Biliteracy development
  • Language-focused teaching strategies
  • Teaching English-language learners
  • Culturally-responsive pedagogies

Program Experience

Our program is unique and offers the following core experiences:

  • A teacher community studying and growing together for 2 years (cohort model)
  • Face-to-face and online instruction
  • Many practicing DLI teachers and DLI associate educators can complete student teaching while they work
  • Innovative, equity-driven curriculum
  • Support and feedback to teacher candidates throughout the program

Admissions and Financial Aid

Priority deadline to apply: December 15

A bachelor's degree and a 2.80 GPA is required. All international students require transcript evaluations.

Prerequisites

You must have completed courses in at least three of the following areas before applying. Remaining prerequisite coursework may be completed during the program or before you begin the program.

  • Introductory or general psychology
  • College-level algebra
  • Introductory science (biology, physics, chemistry, or astronomy
  • Social science (history, human geography, or social science)
  • Literature
