My research and teaching interests focus on curriculum development and the aesthetic development of children and adults with a special emphasis on diverse populations. In general education I am interested in authentic instruction and assessment and the development of reflective practitioners.

Prior to coming to higher education I taught elementary and middle school art in urban schools for 12 years and served full-time as the art curriculum specialist for the Portland Oregon public schools for 10 years. During this time I wrote grants to the Getty Institute for Arts Education to design and implement a discipline-based art education program in the Portland schools. After that grant was completed I established the Northwest Institute for Discipline-Based Art Education at Lewis and Clark College in Portland in order to provide staff development and support to many school districts in Oregon. I also headed the visual arts committee to develop state standards.

Following the completion of the doctorate, I taught for five years at Arizona State University and had an opportunity to develop online curriculum for the Getty’s ArtsEdNet Web site as well as other Web sites and print sources.

With deep experience in public school teaching and administrative levels, as well as professional and state level committees, I bring to higher education significant knowledge of the real world of public schools.
