My scholarship, instruction and service endeavors have focused on the professional development of students within family and consumer sciences education with a research agenda driven by the personal qualities that are central to professional action. Topics of concentration that have fueled my quest to analyze this aspect of the human experience have included passion for selection of major; understanding self within the context of a profession; mentoring; and building capacity through leadership. I make use of qualitative methods of inquiry that provide alternative ways of understanding the process of “becoming” a professional.
Another of my long-held interests involves creating the infrastructure, content, and tools necessary to develop solid professionals and leaders. Previous activities in this area included the design and implementation of a graduate degree program in family and consumer sciences education for those who were unable to participate in a traditionally delivered program of study. The program, which combined resident and distance instruction, taught by the most distinguished leaders in the profession, led to the development of the Family and Consumer Sciences Education Leadership Academy. One of my current goals is to establish and sustain an internationally recognized program for earning advanced degrees in family and consumer sciences education.
