Course description:
CI 5671: Content-Based Second Language Curriculum, Instruction
and Assessment (3 credits)
Content-based language instruction
and curriculum development for dual language and immersion
teachers; balancing content and language goals and objectives in
curriculum and instruction; standards-based instruction;
backwards design; assessment that aligns with content-based
curriculum and instruction. This is a required course for the U
of M’s certificate program in Dual Language and Immersion
Education.
Course topics include: content-based instruction and curriculum development; text analysis; culturally relevant pedagogy; technology for content-based curriculum development; instructional strategies to support content-based instruction; developing academic and social language; learning strategies; language, content, & culture objectives; integrated performance assessment; formative and summative assessment; national and state standards.

Online particulars:
This online course will combine asynchronous (independent) and synchronous (live) sessions with Ning and UM Connect (a system that allows for live video conferencing). Dates and times for live synchronous sessions are to be determined.
Reduced tuition offer:
The College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) at the U of M has partnered with Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) to offer reduced tuition for the course (and others required for the U of M certificate program in Dual Language and Immersion Education).
Total cost for fall course: $980.00
Tuition: $720 ($240 per credit for the reduced tuition rate)
University fee: $195 ($65 per credit)
CEHD Technology Fee: $65 (required for online course)
Note: A minimum of 20 participants is necessary for the reduced tuition rate to apply. The reduced tuition offer applies to all participants—including those outside of MN and the US.
Unique course features:
- Opportunity to interact with dual language/immersion educators from around the country and world since the online format allows for national and international participation.
- Opportunity to interact with special guests in live sessions.
- A variety of interactive activities on course sites: videos, voice chat, text chat, small group work, PowerPoint presentations (with video or voice over), etc.
- All presentations will be done in English, and some may be available in Spanish (we hope to add more languages over time).
- Required are relevant course assignments that link topics/course concepts to classroom practice or program development.
- Course participants will learn new technology applications that they will be able to use with their own students.

All participants must have the following equipment and texts to participate fully in the course.
- High speed internet access
- Good quality microphone/headset
- Good quality webcam
