Required application documents

  1. Transcripts. Unofficial transcripts from all previous graduate and undergraduate institutions, including any transfer credits. International students should also upload an English translation if the transcript is not in English. Official transcripts are not required until after you are admitted. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. institution, or a comparable degree from an accredited institution in another country, is required. A 2.80 cumulative GPA is required for full acceptance. If your GPA is less than 2.80, your application will require a special review.
  2. Resume. Your resume should highlight your experiences and achievements working with children in schools, if applicable.
  3. Applicant Statement (Essay). Describe your reasons for wanting to teach k-6 elementary in an immersion language other than English. What personal and professional experiences have you had that will contribute to your growth as a teacher?
  4. Letter of Recommendation. One letter of recommendation is required. Provide the name and contact information for the recommender. If you work in a school already, the contact you provide should be a supervisor or principal.
  5. Extenuating circumstances statement (optional). This is not required. You may submit a statement if there is something on your transcript that does not accurately reflect who you are as a student. Please write no more than 500 words documenting unusual circumstances or hardships you have faced and the ways in which you have overcome or responded to them.


You must have completed courses in at least three of the following areas before applying. Remaining prerequisite coursework may be completed during the program or before you begin the program.

  • Introductory or general psychology
  • College-level algebra
  • Introductory science (biology, physics, chemistry, or astronomy
  • Social science (history, human geography, or social science)
  • Literature

Application Fees

  • $75 fee for U.S. applicants. You may be contacted to expand on aspects of your application.
  • $95 fee for international applicants.

International applicants

  • Required for non-native English speakers: TOEFL, IELTS or MELAB TOEFL institutional code: 6874. IELTS and MELAB scores must be received directly from the testing center. Score requirement information.
  • You must get a NACES-approved member organization to complete a course-by-course and degree equivalency evaluation of your transcript. Financial Aid and Tuition

We are able to offer a reduced rate of $533 per credit. The 36-credit program will cost a total of $19,200; this rate will save participants nearly $5,000 over the course of the program.

We have scholarships opportunities for applicants working in settings with high numbers of English Language Learners who are not native speakers of English. This may include students who speak languages such as Spanish and Hmong, or learners of endangered languages such as Dakota and Ojibwe.

How to Apply

  1. If you think our program may be a good fit for you, please email all transcripts to be pre-checked by the DLI-L adviser, Jade Beauclair. The adviser will contact you to discuss any missing courses and next steps before you apply. Transcripts reviews may take up to two weeks to complete; please plan accordingly and apply well in advance of the December 15 deadline. The review is optional, but strongly recommended.
