Minimum credit requirement for the Ph.D. program
(effective Fall Semester 2009)
Applies to all students starting the Ph.D. program Fall Semester 2009 or later:
Ph.D. students in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction must take a minimum of 39 course credits while enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Minnesota. The minimum credit requirement can be satisfied only with graduate-level courses taken as a graduate student at the University of Minnesota (these may include up to 12 credits taken at the University of Minnesota as a non-degree-seeking student prior to official admission to the Graduate School). These credits must be completed prior to achieving dissertation status. Exceptions may apply in cases where a student was enrolled in a Ph.D. program at a comparable institution and has transferred to the Ph.D. program in C&I. The minimum credit requirement is a degree requirement instituted by the C&I graduate faculty to ensure that a graduate degree represents preparation beyond course requirements. All course work (including transfer credits) must have been taken within 10 years of filing the program. Any exception to this 10-year policy requires formal petition to the C&I Graduate Studies Committee.
