New
Department:
Organizational
Leadership, Policy,
and Development
Effective July 1, 2009, a
new department has been created
that integrates the business and
marketing education, human
resource development and adult
education, and comprehensive
WHRE programs from the
Department of
Work and Human Resource
Education (WHRE) into the
department formerly known as
Educational Policy and
Administration (EdPA). The
name of this new department is
Organizational Leadership,
Policy, and Development (OLPD).
It will offer exciting
opportunities for collaboration
and interdisciplinary education
and research. Click

learning
Profile
The main theme of my work addresses student and faculty
issues in higher education. My particular interest is in
examining college students and faculty from the perspective
of differential psychology. What motivates an individual to
attend college? What institutional characteristics and
services facilitate students’ academic success, retention
and timely graduation? What opportunities for faculty
contribute to the success and satisfaction? The model I most
ascribe to might be called a matching model, which theorizes
that an individual’s needs and abilities should be congruent
with the environmental rewards and performance requirements.
Good information is needed in order to help individuals make
sound decisions. I am more likely to take a quantitative
approach to research design, but I am comfortable with
qualitative methodologies as well.
I originally intended to be a high school math teacher,
instead completed my Ph.D. in counseling psychology the
discipline of psychology. I bring to my instruction in the
higher education program over two decades of involvement in
studies on retention and graduation rates, institutional
accreditation, academic program review and approval, and
program evaluation in higher education. I enjoy helping
institutions better understand students and faculty, which
facilitates academic success and satisfaction. I also spent
two years chairing the steering committee that developed ISEEK
(Internet System for Education and Employment Knowledge), an
innovative program funded initially by the Minnesota State
Legislature.
I enjoy working individually with students on the design
and implementation of research projects. If you have not
conducted empirical research previously, how do you know
what to expect? As an advisor, I strive to help students
experience the intriguing aspects of conducting research, so
the research you do to complete your degree is not just a
one-time experience. The journey is as important as the
destination.
I am fortunate to be part of a department that places a
premium on excellence in scholarship, instruction and
service to communities outside the institution. If that is
what you seek, I encourage you to apply for admission to one
of our fine graduate programs.
