Writing the essay

Four typed statements addressing the following topics:

  1. Highlight your reasons for choosing a leisure studies management career. Include any preparation and experiences influencing your decision.
    • Talk about your past and current interests, experiences, and training that have influenced you to choose a leisure studies management career.
  2. Highlight what you believe are the primary characteristics of an effective leisure studies professional. Describe how your own personal strengths and leadership skills might reflect these characteristics.
    • What makes an effective leisure studies professional (i.e., if there was a recipe for making an effective leisure studies professional, what do you feel would be the main ingredients)?
    • Talk about your own personal strengths and what you have to offer this profession.
  3. Highlight your experience working with diverse populations and integrate your thoughts regarding diversity.
  4. Describe your personal and professional goals.
    • Talk about your goals using the content you have already talked about in the above statements. For example: “As highlighted above, I have always had a personal interest in ____(insert)____. I feel that I bring to the field ____(insert positive characteristics)_____ and I believe that the recreation, park, and leisure studies program in the College of Education and Human Development will help me to further develop skills and knowledge to achieve my goals of becoming _____(insert)______.”

Specific instructions by the recreation, park, and leisure studies program on what to include in your résumé: a typed résumé of your leisure studies or non-leisure studies-related experiences, including paid, volunteer, or internship work.
