Tips on writing your application essay and résumé
Sport management undergraduate program
Preparation
Gather information:
- Research and read about the program.
- Attend an info session to gather more information. If you can't make it to a session, contact Arien Telles, transfer admissions coordinator.
- Visit the Exploratory, Transition, and Career Services center in 127 Appleby Hall to help you edit your essay or to learn more about the program.
Writing the essay
Four typed statements addressing the following topics:
- What are your reasons for choosing sport management and your
emphasis area? Include any preparation and experiences
influencing your decision.
- Talk about your past and current interests, experiences, and training that have influenced you to choose sport management and your emphasis.
- What do you believe are the primary characteristics and
skills that have brought you a measure of success in your sport
experiences to date?
- Cite examples of specific sport experiences and talk about characteristics which you feel you possess that have contributed to your success in that specific sport experience (i.e., determination – give details and examples that reflect this characteristic).
- Highlight your experience working with diverse populations and integrate your thoughts regarding diversity (e.g., race, class, gender, disability, etc.).
- Describe your personal and professional goals.
- Talk about your goals using the content you have already talked about in the above statements. For example: “As highlighted above, I have a personal interest in ____(insert)____. I feel that I bring to the field ____(insert positive characteristics)_____ and I believe that the sport management program in the College of Education and Human Development will help me to further develop skills and knowledge to achieve my goals of becoming _____(insert)______."
Sample sport management résumé
Specific instructions by the sport management program on what to
include in your résumé:
Describe the highlights of your sport experience to date in a résumé
format. Include the following information:
- The sport(s) in which you have been involved and for how long
- Any honors you have earned
- Sport or sport-related experiences, including paid or volunteer work
- Anything else that will inform the admissions committee of your interest in a career in any area of sport management
