Higher Education Master's (M.A.) Program
The master of arts (M.A.) degree with a program emphasis in higher education,
administered by the Graduate School and offered
by the Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy. and Development (OLPD), provides an opportunity
for intensive study of the policies and organizational issues in higher education
institutions and systems.
Who enrolls in this program?
Students enrolled in higher education are the future leaders, university administrators,
educators, policy analysts and researchers in the field of higher education. The
program is selective and is limited to 25 students each year. All new students begin
the program in the fall semester.
Admission requirements
What will my program look like?
The M.A. requires that students enrolled under the semester system take at least
30 credits of coursework. Typically, a course that meets once a week throughout
the semester is three credits. As part of their program of study, students prepare
a master's Plan B paper (2-4 semester credits). Students may complete the course
work on either a full-time or part-time basis.
See curriculum.
What is the difference between Plan A and Plan B?
The Plan A track requires a thesis that represents
original scholarship, while the Plan B track requires an
extensive paper focusing on an area of the students'
interest. Please communicate with program faculty to
determine which program is best for your professional goals.
How long will my M.A. program take?
Many students are employed full time and spread their course work over 2 years
(including summers). M.A. students must successfully complete their course work,
Plan B Paper and final oral examination to receive their degree. All degree requirements
must be completed within seven years after starting the program. All degree requirements
must be completed within seven years after starting the program including any previous
coursework that may be transferred into the program.
