Readmission
To remain an "active" graduate student at the University of Minnesota students must register for at least one credit every fall and spring term
(This policy is effective as of fall 2002, the earlier policy was that students must register every twelve months to remain
active).
Applications:
Once “inactive”, a student must apply for readmission by completing a
department
readmission form [PDF] and apply via the
online Graduate School
readmission application. Instructions for completing the applications are below. Decisions for
readmission are based on a review of previous progress toward degree completion,
the plan of each student, the timeline for completion, and the availability of faculty
resources.
Instructions:
Department Readmission
The
department readmission form
[PDF] requires the adviser’s signature and a detailed
timeline for completion of the components left in the program. Please note the following
elements of the process:
-
If the student’s adviser is no longer at the University, it is the student’s
responsibility to identify a current faculty member who is willing to serve
in that capacity. Students should explore faculty
member bios to identify areas of interest
applicable to their dissertation topic. Program coordinators could also be contacted
for suggestions.
-
If the student had filed a
degree program
form [PDF] (GS 89a and b) with the graduate school before becoming inactive,
the student should bring a copy of that form and a transcript to the adviser
as a basis for the discussion about the completion timeline. Transcripts can
be obtained at One Stop.
-
If the student had not yet filed a degree program before becoming inactive,
the student should obtain and read a copy of the department’s current
student handbook for the specific degree
objectives (e.g., Ph.D., Ed.D., M.A.). Included are the degree expectations
and the program planning worksheet. Along with a copy of the transcript, the
program planning worksheet can be used for the basis of discussion with the
adviser in planning the timeline. Transcripts can be obtained at
One Stop.
-
The department form with adviser’s signature is submitted to the director of graduate studies.
Graduate School Readmission
Detailed instructions, fees, deadlines, and contact
information are available via the online
Graduate School
readmission application.
Register the term you are accepted for readmission. To avoid repeating the
readmission process, be sure to register for at least one credit every fall and
spring term. Please note
that doctoral students cannot register for any of the 24 thesis credits until passing
the oral prelim exam. If students have not yet completed the oral prelim, have completed
all course work but need to stay active, students can register for a pre-thesis
credit, EdPA 8666.These pre-thesis credits are not graded, do not require class
work and are not counted in the program (but, students do pay tuition).
After passing the prelim oral, doctoral students can register for thesis credits
under EdPA 8888. While 24 thesis credits are required, all credits cannot be taken
the same semester. Thesis credits must be taken over a period of at least two terms
(fall and spring semester, summer and spring/fall). The oral prelim and thesis credits
cannot be taken in the same term (unless the oral prelim is completed before the
registration deadline for that term).
