Master
of arts (M.A.)
Plan B What can you do with an M.A. in counseling?
M.A.
programs frequently lead to the following types of careers: college
counselor or student development professional, school counselor (state
licensure requirements must also be completed), multicultural counselor,
career counselor, community agency counselor, counselor in employee
assistance programs, or human resource development specialist. To prepare
you for these professional roles, we provide a program that emphasizes
generic counseling and research skills.
Who should apply?
You can enter the master's program after
you have completed a bachelor's degree. As with the Ph.D. program, we
welcome applications from those with backgrounds both inside and outside
psychology. As stated above, counselors help people with many different
problems and needs, and a broad-based education is as much an asset as one
that is primarily psychological in nature.

How do you earn a master's in counseling?

other foundational. In the following description, we have
included the approximate number of semester credits that you would take in
each area. Students who desire licensure as a school counselor or a
specialization in college student development will have a modified program.
