EPSY 5272—Statistics Teaching Internship

Course objectives

The purpose of the Statistics Teaching Internship is to provide students in the statistics education area of concentration with appropriate preparation to teach undergraduate statistics courses with supervision. Students will prepare, teach, be observed, and also reflect on/evaluate their teaching experience.

Prior to internship:

  • Preparation as a TA during a term prior to teaching or sitting in on 3264 or 5261 for one semester prior to the internship.
  • Complete EPSY 5271—Becoming a Teacher of Statistics.

During the internship:

  • Teach a section of undergraduate statistics with supervision.
  • Meet regularly with other instructors and TAs.
  • Read appropriate papers from the literature related to teaching as directed by supervisor.
  • Have two classroom observations by the internship supervisor.
  • Prepare and submit a teaching portfolio.

Student assignments

Students will put together a course teaching portfolio. The portfolio will include the course syllabus, sample handouts, sample activities, samples of student work, and a reflection paper on the teaching experience. These materials will be graded on an S/N basis.
