Graduate assistantship employment in PsyF/QME

As you may know, there are various assistantships offered at the University. PsyF/QME positions will be posted on this Web site. Other assistantship postings at the University of Minnesota can be found at the Graduate Assistant Employment Office Web site.

In the spring, PsyF/QME will post on the Web a listing of available graduate assistant positions in PsyF/QME for the next May/summer session and the next academic year. An e-mail notification will be sent to students when they are posted. New students and prospective students who have submitted an application for admission will be sent notification of the academic year posting. You may apply for the positions in which you are interested, and faculty will select research and teaching assistants based on their interests and experiences. Assistantships are competitive and the number of positions each year is limited. Many students who apply for positions are hired for one or more positions; however, there is no guarantee of employment. A background in statistics, computers and/or teaching is often helpful.

PsyF/QME assistantships are generally 25% positions and the salary for most assistantships is approximately $16.22/hour. Summer positions will typically be 20% appointments. All appointments are contingent on available funding.

We also encourage you to seek out research or teaching assistant positions in other departments in the college or at the University level. The College of Education and Human Development Web site is a good source of information about departments and contacts in the College. In addition to information about the six academic departments in the College, the Web site lists information about more than 20 nationally designated research and service centers housed within the College (for example, some PsyF/QME students have held appointments in the Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvement—CAREI). Various programs in epidemiology and the School of Public Health at the University also hire a number of research assistants, including some students from our department. Those of you who live outside the Twin Cities area should consider writing to these places (include a resume). The Graduate Assistant Office Web site posts assistantships for University departments and should be checked frequently. The Student Employment Office also lists many opportunities for on-campus employment. Students from outside the Twin Cities area who will be seeking assistantships are encouraged to arrive as early as possible.

Please weigh your alternatives if you currently live in the Twin Cities area and hold a position of employment that allows flexibility for school attendance and coursework before giving it up in favor of on-campus employment. With our limited resources and absence of placement services within the department, students should take initiative and be proactive in seeking graduate assistant positions. Your adviser can serve as a reference when you apply for assistantships and may be a good resource for available positions.

SPEAK test requirement
University of Minnesota policy requires that all prospective teaching assistants who are non-native speakers of English take the SPEAK Test when they arrive or provide official documentation of their score on the Test of Spoken English (TSE). The University offers the SPEAK Test at no cost to students who have been admitted to the Graduate School. Results of the SPEAK or the TSE will determine a graduate student's initial eligibility for a TA assignment. For details, see www.umn.edu/ohr/teachlearn/nonnative/speak/.
