U of MN Scholar DatabaseBrief description The U of MN Noyce Scholar database contains the data used for the quantitative descriptions and analyses of the scholars who took the 2007 scholar survey and who were also found in the ORC Macro International Inc. Noyce program monitoring system (ORC database). This database includes factor scores; responses to the most comprehensive form of the 2007 scholar survey; and merged data from the ORC database regarding the demographics, academic background, and teaching experiences of the scholars. To maintain the confidentiality of the scholars, each individual and institution were randomly assigned a number. Factor Scores Following the variable columns for the Scholars’ Number and the Institution Numbers, the proceeding columns contain the factor scores and categorical survey items (PS4Q6a & CPS4Q7a). The factor scores for both pair-wise and list-wise deletion procedures are provided (variable columns 3-19). Please refer to Final Report Section Two: Factor Analysis of the Evaluation Questionnaire to determine which items constituted to which factors. Survey Items The responses to the survey items are found after the factor scores (variable columns 20-160). The variable view of the database informs on the coding used for the items. The responses of items 20 -91 are modified responses and used in factor analysis. The responses of items 92-150 are the exact responses of the scholars. Merged Data from ORC database Data for demographics, academic background, and teaching experience characteristics are found after the survey items (variable columns161-327).This information was merged from the ORC database. It should be noted that a few of the variables were redundant in the ORC database and therefore were recoded by U of MN Noyce evaluation team. For example the variables majors and intended subject to teach were recoded because the Principal Investigators reported the major and intended subject to teach of their scholars for each year of the examined monitoring period (e.g. major_bio_2004, major_bio_2005, major_bio_2006, and major_bio_2007). As a result, there was much redundancy of information. These variables were recoded so that one variable column represented all the scholars of that particular major or intended subject to teach (e.g. major_bio). In addition, in order for independent t-test between the majors to occur for Final Report Section Five: Combined analysis of the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program using ORC Macro and UMN evaluation data, comparison pairs were created, and these are in variable columns 291 through 327 of the database.
