Curriculum Vitae

My research focuses primarily on preschool-aged children, and the skills and competencies that will enable them to learn and participate in school and other settings. Within this broad area, I am interested in the design, evaluation, and application of easy-to-use tools for describing children’s current language, literacy, and other important skills; the design and evaluation of interventions that support development of these skills, particularly in “nonspecialized” settings; and the design and improvement of programs – from classroom efforts to comprehensive community-wide efforts – that help children of all ages develop fully.

Through our research, we have developed Individual Growth and Development Indicators, tools that allow teachers to efficiently monitor young children’s language and early literacy development. While my colleagues and I continue research to improve and expand these tools, we are also working with a private company to disseminate commercially products based on this work.

My teaching focuses on research on language and early literacy assessment and development, and on research methods in special education and community-based settings. I am an affiliate of the Center for Early Education and Development, and have served as the Fesler-Lambert Chair of Urban and Regional Affairs. I also am past director of both CEED and the Institute on Community Integration.
