My research has focused on information access for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, with an emphasis on language development, reading, and modality of coding language input. I have served as the project director for several training grants which have evolved into programs serving the special needs community of Minnesota and the deaf and hard of hearing education field nationally. The Rural Professional Training Program provides opportunities to teachers in rural areas to pursue licensure and a master's degree in education for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. This outreach program is in cooperation with state universities across Minnesota. A second area of training is the preparation of teachers of the deaf so that they can serve students with additional learning needs, including cultural adaptations and disabilities. Research in the development of communication skills including ASL, English reading, and writing skills is an ongoing process.
