M.Ed. in applied kinesiology and initial licensure
Admission requirements
The graduate studies office and M.Ed. adviser review M.Ed. applications, with possible input from faculty who may be assigned as advisers. Then recommendations are made to the College of Education and Human Development, which has final authority in the admissions process. (See more information below.)
- M.Ed. applicants must have completed a baccalaureate degree with at least a 2.5 overall GPA before entering the M.Ed. program at the University of Minnesota. M.Ed. applicants must submit all undergraduate and graduate transcripts to CEHD Student Services.
- M.Ed. applicants must complete the M.Ed./professional studies application form [.pdf] or the M.Ed./initial licensure application form [.pdf] and submit it to Student Services. If you did not receive the form or received the wrong one, contact the School of Kinesiology Graduate Studies Office at 612-625-4380.
- International M.Ed. applicants whose native language is not English must submit scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) to Student Services, and are expected to achieve a score of at least 550 (213 on the computer based test). International students, who will have completed 16 semester (24 quarter) credits in residence as a full-time student at a recognized institution of higher education in the United States before entering the University of Minnesota, are exempted from this requirement.
- International M.Ed. students requiring an I-20 form for a student visa must complete and submit to Student Services the International Student Financial Certification Statement which will be mailed upon admission to the program.
M.Ed. options
The Division of Kinesiology offers both M.Ed./initial licensure and M.Ed./professional studies programs. Students earning an M.Ed. in applied kinesiology may select specific program emphases from among the following.

The M.Ed./professional studies program has three options: sport and exercise science, sport management, and developmental/adapted physical education. - Initial licensure
The M.Ed./initial licensure is for individuals pursuing initial licensure as physical education teachers.
