Laboratory for Health and
Human Performance in Extreme Environments

 Lab: 612-624-7698  | email: extreme@umn.edu

The goals of our lab are to:

  • identify commonalties and differences in various extreme environments in order to integrate methods for evaluation of individual and population health and protection in such conditions

  • examine the interaction of psychological adaptation, cardiovascular system and another primary regulating mechanisms activity in extreme environments

  • intensively study the physiology of heat transfer processes as a primary mechanism for protection in extreme conditions

  • apply ongoing space-related and other research on health protection in extreme environments for Earth purposes

  • conduct research with a special Minnesota emphasis on the demands of living in a cold climate

  • integrate physiological and human performance research for developing innovative technologies to increase the quality of life of able-bodied and disabled people

  • examine physiological/hygienic features of materials for the “smart” design of clothing and protective equipment

  • improve technologies for human protection and health enhancement in partnerships with industry

  • apply space-developed technology to maintain thermal status in environmental extremes and during surgical procedures
