Research support and awards

Reducing Clinical Inertia in Diabetes Care [A03-083]. NIDDK - National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney Diseases. PI: Patrick O’Connor. Start Date: 9/1/2004; Duration: 4 years. Clinical inertia, defined as lack of treatment intensification in a patient not at evidence-based goals for glycated hemoglobin (A1c), systolic blood pressure (SBP), or LDL-cholesterol (LDL), is a factor in about 80% of the 40 million office visits made each year by adults with diabetes in the U.S. Clinical inertia is a major obstacle to high quality diabetes care, and contributes too many potentially preventable macrovascular and microvascular complications, premature disability and mortality, and at least $4 billion a year of potentially preventable health care charges in the U.S. In this randomized trial we evaluate two conceptually distinct but potentially synergistic interventions designed to reduce clinical inertia in the outpatient care of adults with type 2 diabetes. Detailed economic analysis will identify short-term direct medical costs related to interventions. Results of this project will have significant clinical and policy implications.

Use of Phoneline Support and an Activity Monitor in Pediatric Weight Control [98-051]. HPRF - HealthPartners Research Foundation. PI: George Biltz. Start Date: 7/1/1998; Duration: 6 months. This study will assess two interventions to aid in control of weight in supraobese adolescents. The Partners for Better Health phoneline has designed a pediatric weight counseling module. Part of the group will periodically use an activity monitor to encourage exercise. This study will determine the effectiveness of these approaches.
