How to apply to the MITER program

Note: The MITER Program will not be accepting new applications after Fall 2009, unless a new predoctoral training grant competition would be offered by IES in the future. If such a competition were offered, MITER will place an update here. We are unable to say whether another competition will be offered in the future.

Who may apply

The highly competitive and demanding MITER program is open to doctoral students who have been admitted to the Graduate School and to a doctoral program in a degree-granting department at the University of Minnesota. It is designed for doctoral students in any field interested in applying their disciplinary knowledge and research skills to problems in education.

Fifteen to 30 student fellows will eventually be selected for the five-year program. Preference will be given to students with a strong undergraduate record, research experience, and a commitment to research on educational problems.

Students may apply to MITER while applying for admission as a doctoral student.

Although the MITER program can fund only U.S. citizens or permanent residents, we encourage international students to participate in MITER, for example, by enrolling in the education sciences minor or in selected MITER courses; and/or participating in seminars, research day activities, and the journal club.

The University of Minnesota and the MITER program are committed to recruiting diverse student populations and to ensuring accessibility to all persons, regardless of disability. The office of Disability Services offers resources and assistance to students, faculty, and staff.
