Private College Leadership Network
The Private College Leadership Network supports emerging and current leaders in private colleges across Minnesota and nationally. Born out of the jCENTER for Innovative Higher Education, the network is a collaboration among two colleges within the University of Minnesota: The College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) and College of Continuing Education (CCE).
Private colleges have unique leadership development needs given the changing landscape of the sector and future succession planning. Findings from a recent report from the Council on Independent Colleges (CIC) reveal challenges ahead:
- Fewer than one in four CIC Chief Academic Officers (CAOs) say that they plan to seek a college presidency. Where will the next leaders come from? Will they be prepared for the challenges they will face?
- Younger CIC CAOs, and those who most recently served as administrators outside of academic affairs, are more likely to indicate interest in the presidency. Where will these younger leaders obtain the knowledge and skills to be successful in senior roles?
The PCL network offers a 12-credit certificate program called the Private College Leadership Certificate aimed to prepare current and future directors, deans, vice presidents, and presidents of private colleges. In addition, the network offers scholarly resources and design thinking workshops to support innovation and change in the private college sector.
