Frequently asked questions
1. Academic year vs. graduation year?
You should be pulling data on your alumni who studied abroad – not graduated – in the ten target years (1960, 1965, etc. to 2005). We define a year as an academic year from September to August. To take 1995 as an example, that “year” is September 1995 to August 1996.
2. Undergraduates only; undergraduates and graduate students?
The SAGE project is looking at alumni who studied abroad as undergraduates only. We are not examining the experiences of graduate students.
3. Length, type of study abroad?
You should identify all alumni who studied abroad in the target year regardless of the duration, type, or time of year.
4. Institutional data files?
You will maintain the master data file for each target year; it will consist of the names, current email addresses, and current postal addresses for study abroad students. That’s it. The SAGE survey will gather more detailed information about the respondents’ study abroad experiences and other demographic data.
4. IRB questions
- Consent forms, survey, interview questions
Attached are our draft consent forms, draft interview questions, and a pdf version of the draft survey instrument. The survey and the interview protocol are being revised. When that process is completed, the survey and interview consent forms will be modified accordingly and submitted to the IRB with the final version of the instruments. The survey will be an online instrument. - Timeline for the study?
The timeline for the SAGE study is three years: September 2006 to August 2009.
We anticipate that the survey will take respondents 20-30 minutes to complete. We anticipate that each interview will take approximately 1 hour and will likely be conducted by telephone.
