Areas of Interest

Profile

My professional interests include gender and education, youth policy, social capital, and international development education. As the Deputy Director for the Learn, Earn, and Save Initiative, I am currently working with Dr. David Chapman and Dr. Joan DeJaeghere to assess the overall impact of non-formal and formal educational initiatives on out-of-school youth. I received my master’s degree from the University of Minnesota in educational policy and administration, with a program focus in comparative and international development education. My past scholarly work includes multiple partnerships with CARE to investigate girls’ and boys’ empowerment and education efforts in eight developing countries, examine adolescent girls’ leadership in Honduras using CARE’s Girls Leadership Index (GLI) survey, and refine instruments and data collection processes for CARE’s girls’ empowerment initiatives. I also served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Dominican Republic working in youth development.

Dissertation Topic

Through my dissertation research, I seek to understand how youth themselves define social capital and how they are able (or unable) to mobilize their social capital to improve their livelihoods. I hope to focus on one one particularly marginalized group, female youth living in poverty attending two boarding secondary schools in Tanzania.
