Profile

Prior to joining the University of Minnesota as a master’s of arts student (in CIDE) in fall 2011, I had been a high school teacher in Kenya since 1995. I headed my school’s academic department in addition to performing the regular classroom duties. At the national level, I was an examiner in French oral examinations and setter for the Kenya National Examinations Council. I had also been appointed as a textbook evaluator (for French) by the Kenya Institute of Education and evaluated some of the French textbooks currently used in Kenya’s secondary schools’ curriculum.

My interest in CIDE began with the clamor for educational reforms in Kenya by various stakeholders. There has been a feeling in the country that the current system of education is not doing enough to address the country’s manpower and development needs. As a teacher, I wanted to take part in this critical debate, and hence my interest in CIDE. I knew that studying CIDE would give me an opportunity to examine some of the fundamental problems and questions in international education from a critical perspective and be able to apply them to the Kenyan context.
