Curriculum Vitae

What motivates me in my work?

I began teaching first-year experience courses in 1985, and decided to include Arthur Chickering’s (1969) “Seven Vectors of College Student Development” in that curriculum. I articulated my own sense of purpose (one of the vectors) before asking students to do so. Since then my purpose has not changed; it is to touch students’ lives in ways that may not be significant in the grand scheme of things, but may still make a small difference. That continues to be what motivates me.

What can students expect from me?

One of our MA program alumnae refers to me as “tough, but in a good way.” I have very high expectations. Meanwhile, I am also extremely flexible and strongly support the tenets of universal instructional design and integrated multicultural instructional design. Thus, I believe that all students should have the opportunity to learn and to demonstrate their knowledge in ways that reflect their own strengths and ways of knowing.
