Master of Arts
Multicultural College Teaching and Learning
Why you belong here
Students in PsTL’s Master of Arts in Multicultural College Teaching and Learning program will engage in research that addresses how to maximize the potential of higher education to better contribute to our diverse society. You belong here if you want to engage in a critical examination of contemporary frameworks in educational theory, as well as the study of best practices for addressing them—such as multicultural education, critical pedagogy, assessment, and classroom research.
Key Program Design Features
Multicultural education and universal instructional design are central features in the core curriculum. Because PsTL graduate faculty members have doctorates in a variety of disciplines, the curriculum features an embedded interdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning and student development. Please see the chart outlining core requirements for the master’s degree and sample plans for Plan A and Plan B tracks.
Our program intentionally foregrounds the nexus of theory and practice, and focuses on transformative approaches to promote access to and success for traditionally underserved students. Students are required to complete a semester-long supervised practicum and a two-semester supervised internship. PsTL graduate faculty will supervise and grade the practicum and internship experiences. Students will have the opportunity to complete their practicum and internships in the PsTL First Year Experience (FYE) curriculum, in a learning assistance center, center on teaching and learning, or other appropriate site either at the University of Minnesota, a MnSCU campus, or at another site with permission from the director of graduate studies.
CEHD & University Resources
Students are also encouraged to take advantage of existing intellectual resources by enrolling in courses in other units in the College of Education and Human Development and at the University. In addition to the core requirements for the master’s degree, students must take a minimum of 6 credits of course work outside of the department. Please see the chart of pre-approved electives for the master’s degree.
