North Side Chess club: A weekly event sponsored by the read-In

The North Side Chess Club was started by a grant from NorthPoint Health and Wellness and is supported by a grant from General Mills. The chess club facilitator is Donald Hooker, a member of Black Men Reading and a North Minneapolis resident.  Donald works closely with the club participants as a coach and mentor.

On August 28, 2010, the African American Read-In held its Summer chess tournament marking the end of the 2009 - 2010 school year program.  Based on the attendance records compiled by library staff at North Regional Library, the chess club recorded almost 600 participants between September 5 and August 28.  We look forward to a busy 2010-2011 year which began on September 4th.
