early Reading

Welcome to the homepage for the Computer-Based Assessment Project for early Reading (CBAS-R). This project is funded by the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) within the US Department of Education. Dr. Theodore (Ted) Christ tchrist@umn.edu is the Principle Investigator. He along with the co-investigators and project staff have and will continue to contribute to the CBAS-R development and dissemination.

Project Goal: demonstrate the potential to develop and implement a computer adaptive test (CAT) for use to screen student skills, analyze skill development, and monitor student progress across time within general and specific skill domains. Those assessment outcomes will be useful to prevent, diagnose and remediate the establishment of deficit achievement in reading and reading-related learning disabilities.

Assessment Domains: the CBAS-R will assess students in seven domains, which were selected after a review of the reading research and literature. The critical influences were effective instructional programs and the findings of the national reading panel. The a priori model for the development of CBAS-R is depicted below. Each of these assessment domains was analyzed and sub-domains defined. Those domains, sub-domains, and example of items are presented in a series of technical reports (see technical report page).

We assume that the fundamental skills to enable reading are developed by third grade. Since those skills are important to childhood and adult outcomes, then those skills should routinely assess in a manner that guides instruction and early intervention.
