Collaborating for Reading Achievement

MCRR invites you to a special event for Principals, District Coordinators, and Literacy Leaders. Join us for a strategy session concerning school improvement efforts in literacy instruction. We want to offer you this time to discuss your needs and intervention plans, connect with other district leaders, and brainstorm about future collaborations. Hot breakfast will be served.
RSVP by Wednesday, May 15th to mcrr@umn.edu with the name and title of each person planning to attend. There is no cost to attend, though registration will be limited to the first 100 respondents.

Bridging Research to Practice 2013-14
Workshop Series for K-6 School Improvement in Reading
August 2013 - April 2014
The purpose of these small-group workshops is to help school leaders and teachers in grades K-6 learn how to use scientifically-based reading instruction to improve reading achievement. The sessions will focus on organizational change and the development of shared leadership and school-wide collaboration, and may be tailored to meet the specific needs of your school. Learn more.
The workshops are intended for a team of elementary school staff (administrators, classroom teachers, reading resource teachers, ELL teachers, and special education teachers). Each team may register for one or more series. Each participant will be awarded 16 CEU clock hours for a completed workshop series.
Choose from four different workshop series, each meeting four times over the 2013-14 school year:

MCRR Achievement Gap Conference: Moving Forward Together

The MCRR will host a conference this fall to bring together researchers, policy makers, and practitioners to engage in a working meeting on the Achievement Gap.
This is not your typical conference. Our plan is to structure three short and provocative keynotes throughout the day by national "thought leaders." Each presentation will be followed by a brief panel interaction, and then participants will work at tables to contribute to the dialogue. So, we ask you to bring your strategies and we’ll work together in this evolving practice. The day will be organized into three sessions – Social Contexts, Families and Communities, and Organizational Structures – that feature a researcher, policy maker, and educational practitioner deeply involved in the issue.
This will be a time to generate ideas, contribute to an exchange of propositions, and create something to share. One goal of this conference is to produce a book to collect the synergy of the group as a resource to develop and share. We look forward to a productive, engaged conference and we hope you will join us.

TESOL International will be holding one of its summer academies here in Minnesota, at Bethel University in St. Paul.
This 2-day professional development opportunity is a wonderful way to dig into one timely topic and learn from a nationally recognized speaker, all within a small-group atmosphere. Usually such professional development is only available to Minnesotans if we visit a national conference, but this time the conference is coming to the US! One of the sessions will be led by MCRR co-director Dr. Lori Helman.

One-Week Summer Course with MCEE
Free graduate credits for educators on using children's literature to teach economics

University of Minnesota graduate students in Literacy Education are invited to participate in a one-week summer course with the Minnesota Council on Economic Education (MCEE) that provides two free graduate credits from the UMN. MCEE is based in the Department of Applied Economics on the St. Paul Campus. MCEE provides professional development opportunities for K-12 teachers with the goal of increasing the economic and personal finance literacy of students.
This summer course, Using Children’s Literature to Teach Economics and Personal Finance, helps teachers integrate economic concepts into their classroom using children’s literature they may already be using for reading. The course is centered on the social studies standards in economics for grades K-5 while focusing on literature that can be used to teach these concepts. The course is taught by a popular economics educator, Professor Curt Anderson, and a master teacher, Nancy Krenner.
Who can attend? Licensed Minnesota educators currently teaching grades K-5 and highly qualified paraprofessionals (who have no less than two years experience in a classroom and postsecondary education or demonstrated competence in a field or academic subject for which there is a significant shortage of qualified teachers)
Registration is $80 and includes curriculum materials, 48 hours of continuing education units, refreshments, and lunch. In addition to the summer course, participants are expected to attend two follow up Saturday meetings during the academic year and are responsible for a final written project in order to receive the graduate credit. Graduate credit will be earned in summer 2014.
Participating teachers will receive a stipend of $150 for the workshop, with additional stipends of $30 distributed for the follow-up workshops. Ten travel stipends of $275 are available to those residing outside the seven county Metro area, along with a $50 stipend for each follow-up session.
