Exploring—and then choosing—a field placement takes effort, but it's worth it!
Whether you are an incoming M.S.W. student or a current student in the school, exploration and choice of a field placement is a significant and exciting step in your social work education.
Once in field, individualized assessment of your own field-related knowledge and skills and development of an individualized learning contract guide professional learning throughout each placement. You and your field instructor continually assess your progress in your field learning. Twice during each field placement, formal evaluations are completed in order to give clear feedback on strengths and areas for development.
Well-chosen field placements significantly assist you in integrating classroom learning into real-world professional practice. Aim for a good "fit" between your learning needs and style, the experiences offered by the field placement, and you and your field instructor. Stretch yourself! This is the time to be a student and to measure your success by all you learn.
The links below lead you to information you will need when exploring field placements, making field placement choices, and then successfully navigating through each field practicum.
