2009 Lessons from the Field: Autism Series

The Center for Excellence in Children’s Mental Health, in conjunction with University and community partners, is once again sponsoring a series of workshops focusing on bridging the gap from research to practice in children’s mental health. This year’s Lessons from the Field series will focus on Autism Spectrum Disorders. On November 21, 2008, the first workshop in the series, Foundations of Autism, will be held on the University of Minnesota metro campus and broadcast to over 35 host sites around the state. Dr. Scott Selleck and a panel of University faculty and community professionals with expertise in the field of autism will present on “what the research is telling us and is not telling us” regarding emerging issues in the field of autism. Recently, concerns around the incidence and causes of autism have placed autism in the spotlight. Misconceptions and myths have abounded and professionals as well as families are faced with sorting through what is fact vs myth. The presentation will focus on the current research and what it can and can’t tell us about the many facets of autism causation and resulting presentations and interventions.

The third workshop in the 2008-09 Lessons from the Field Series will feature Dr. Randi Hagerman, a professor of pediatrics and the endowed chair of Fragile X research at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, where she also serves as the medical director of the M.I.N.D. Institute. Dr. Hagerman has a strong clinical and research interest in autism and the association between autism and Fragile X syndrome. Her presentation will focus on the current multidisciplinary aspects of treatment, intersection of autism and Fragile X, and developmental targeted treatments which require multidisciplinary interventions to be effective in treating autism spectrum disorders. Amy Esler, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics, UMN, and psychologist with the UMN Children's Hospital, will present on behavioral interventions and their application in working with autistic children and their families.

The final workshop in the 2008-09 Lessons from the Field: Autism Series will focus on integrative medicine, featuring Dr. Lawrence Rosen, a board-certified general pediatrician committed to family-centered, holistic child health care.  Dr. Rosen practices primary care at the Whole Child Center in Oradell, MJ, and consults at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children's Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center, serving as Chief of Pediatric Integrative Medicine.  He will present on current research in the field of integrative medicine and its application in working with children with autism and their families.  Dr. Allison Golnik, Department of Pediatrics, University of Minnesota, will present the results from a physician survey on complementary alternative medicine for children with autism.  A panel discussion including University faculty and community professionals with expertise in the fields of autism and integrative medicine will follow the presentations.
