Background on the Recognition Ceremony
Each spring, the School of Social Work hosts a ceremony at the Ted Mann Concert Hall on the West Bank, Minneapolis campus. At this ceremony, students’ progress toward the M.S.W. or Ph.D. degrees is recognized and honored. This is not considered an official University commencement event, but there is a presentation of degree candidates. Most students wear caps, gowns, and degree hoods, though this is not required. A reception for degree candidates and guests is held immediately afterward in the lobby of the Ted Mann Concert Hall. There is no limit to the number of guests one can invite. RSVPs and estimates on the number of guests will be due by the middle of spring semester.
Students often ask why we do not hold the ceremony on the St. Paul campus. Currently, St. Paul does not have a space large enough to accommodate the number of graduates and their guests.
Requirements for participation:
- Must be in good standing (i.e. cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, no more than 6 semester credits of incomplete grades).
- Degree Program Form must be filed and approved by the Graduate School.
- Must have completed all program requirements (see Appendix of M.S.W. Handbook for exceptions).
