TeRI Partnerships

Schools and Teacher Educators Working Closely Together

Through University partnerships with designated professional development schools, teacher candidates will gain access to high quality school-based experiences and to the expertise of master teachers.

At the same time, the schools will gain opportunities to develop the leadership and instructional skills of their faculty. The focus of professional development schools is research-based teaching and learning that will benefit P-12 students.

Two Paths for Partnership

  • Professional Development Schools (PDS)

  • A PDS serves as a hub learning site for new teachers. Much like a medical school partners with a teaching hospital for in-depth practical clinical experience, teacher education programs will partner with PDSs to better prepare teachers for their careers in the classroom.

    Professional Development Schools:

    • Provide a location for candidate preparation
    • Benefit from professional development from University of Minnesota faculty
    • Receive induction support to bridge academic preparation and the realities of school classrooms
    • Follow teacher support partnership guidelines.

A PDS may involve a single school or multiple schools, school systems and IHEs, and may take many forms to reflect specific partnership activities and approaches to improving both teacher education and P-12 schools.

  • Partner Schools

  • A partner school is a cooperating school that provides practical learning experiences in a clinical setting.

    • Single placements or small cluster schools similar to current student teaching agreements between specific initial licensure programs and schools schools
    • Same placement calendar as PDSs
    • No exclusive clinical placement agreement

Current Partner Districts

These seven initial school districts are working with the University of Minnesota to create Professional Development Schools (PDS).
More

The seven initial school districts have been meeting regularly with the Partnership Task Group to clarify our vision for improved teacher preparedness within the new PDS model.

Prospective Partner Districts

We are actively seeking new partnerships to better prepare teachers and enhance Minnesota schools.
More

A key element of TERI is to more closely align our work with numerous partner districts and schools to establish professional development schools (PDS).

Similar to a medical residency, our teaching candidates would work in a PDS across an academic year in varying roles of increasing responsibility.

We are interested in establishing PDSs in additional districts, and we welcome conversations with district leaders to begin this process.
