Minnesota Agricultural Education Teacher Induction Program
(TIP)
Overview
TIP was established during the 1999-2000 school year, and
completed its ninth year of induction and mentoring activities
during the 2007-08 school year. A total of 151 entry-level
agricultural education teachers have participated in TIP during
this time period. TIP is a collaborative program involving
entry-level teachers (ELTs) (note: ELT is defined as a beginning
teacher as well as an individual returning to teaching or
provisionally certified); local school districts; the
Division of
Agricultural, Food and Environmental Education (AFFE) at the
University of Minnesota; the
Minnesota
Department of Education (MDE); the
Minnesota Association of
Agricultural Educators (MAAE); and the
Minnesota Agricultural
Education Leadership Council (MAELC). In an effort to assist
ELTs during the induction and socialization process, the goals
of TIP are to:
- Provide teaching and program management resources
- Provide an opportunity to analyze and reflect upon
teaching
- Provide psychosocial support
- Improve teacher effectiveness
- Improve teacher retention
Research indicates that teachers who participate in induction
programs are more effective teachers, experience greater job
satisfaction, and are more likely to stay in the teaching
profession. As a result, the TIP director leads a collaborative
team of professionals who design and implement programming that
involves individualized and group interactions to assist ELTs.
Annual programming typically involves four professional
development seminars, and providing each ELT with a senior
mentor. Depending on the amount of assistance needed or
requested, the senior mentor meets with the ELT from three to
six days at the teacher’s school to observe and provide
feedback, deliver desired forms of assistance and psychosocial
support, and encourage reflective thinking on effective teaching
and the induction process.
