Teaching and Research Interests
- Outcomes of human resource development
- International human resource development
- Organization development
- Career and technical education
I was born in Christchurch, New Zealand. I graduated from
Lincoln University in New Zealand with a bachelor's degree in
parks and recreation management. I received a master of science
and my Ph.D. in human resource education from the University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to my graduate study I
worked in a variety of positions related to recreation
management and human resource development in both New Zealand
and the United States.
My research program is focused on the process and
organizational outcomes of human resource development (HRD).
Within this focus, I am pursuing four areas of research. My
first research area examines attitude and performance changes
that individuals and organizations experience as a result of HRD
participation. The major thrust of this research is the
relationship between HRD participation and organizational
commitment and employee engagement. My second major focus of my
current research relates to international HRD. Of particular
interest is the influence of host-country ownership on HRD
practices. The third research stream is related to the role of
industry-sponsored credential especially in career and technical
education. My final research area examines HRD in the leisure
and tourism industry.
I have been involved in HRD and research activities
throughout the United States and in a number of countries. I
have worked as a consultant, conducted research, and taught
classes and workshops in countries including New Zealand,
Pacific Islands, India, Jamaica, Georgia, and the
United Kingdom.
I teach classes at the University of Minnesota in adult
education and HRD as well as research methods and philosophy. To
date, I have taught the following courses: Introduction to Human
Resource Development, Introduction to Organization Development,
Survey of Adult Education and Human Resource Development,
Training and Development of Human Resources, Organization
Development, Foundations of Inquiry, Survey of Research Methods
and Emerging Research in HRD, and the doctoral level Research
Seminar.
