Career Assessment Tools

Deciding on the right major or choosing a career is easier when you have an informed “sense of self” and know about your personality and interests. A career assessment is a set of questions or activities to help you discover what type of work you might enjoy and how you interact with other people.

There are no right or wrong answers in a career assessment. The results of your assessments can give you insights about your strengths and preferences that can inform your career journey.

Who can take an assessment?

Current College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) students and recent CEHD alumni (graduated 0-2 years ago) can take the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) or the Strong Interest Inventory (SII). To take one of these assessments, schedule an appointment with a CEHD Career Coach.

How do I get my results?

After you take an assessment, schedule a follow-up appointment with a CEHD Career Coach to discuss your results by calling 612-625-3339 or make an appointment online. NOTE: If you take the MBTI or SSI and are not a CEHD student/alumni, contact your college’s career office for career assessment options.

What assessments are available?

  • Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) -- The MBTI Career Report is designed to identify your personality type and use that information to explore careers. It is based on the belief that individuals are most satisfied and successful in jobs that allow them to use their natural preferences. Personality type is a way of determining those preferences and which occupations may provide the greatest opportunity for expression. Expect to spend 35 to 40 minutes answering questions online. To take the MBTI, schedule an appointment with a CEHD Career Coach and request a login link.
  • Strong Interest Inventory (SII) -- The SII assessment is used to help you understand your work interests and to show you kinds of work in which you might be comfortable. The SII is not a test of your abilities; it is an inventory of things you might like to do. Expect to spend 35 to 40 minutes answering questions online. To take the SII, schedule an appointment with a CEHD Career Coach and request a login link.
  • Values Card Sort -- Values are priorities for your life and career. Values are what is important to you. Knowing your values helps you know what majors or careers fit you. This online activity from Think2Perfom has you explore your top values. Expect to spend 10-15 minutes on this activity.
  • Work Values Matcher -- Work values are our beliefs about what’s most important in our work. This quick online card sort asks you to rank statements to define your ideal job.
