Methods of planning/teaching science to middle school students.

Fall 2009: CI 5534—Studies in Science Education

Improvement of science teaching through the application of research findings.

Fall 2009: CI 5536—Equity, Policy, and Assessment in Science Education

Development and teaching of extended science activities: structured controversies, field-based activities, service learning projects and computer-based investigations; development of authentic assessments and students' portfolios based on national and state guidelines.

Fall 2009: CI 5537—Principles of Environmental Education

Critical review of Environmental Education, its history, theories, curricula, teaching methods, and assessment practices. Development of an exemplary unit plan for teaching environmental studies.

Fall 2009: CI 5539—Improving Secondary Science Instruction: Surviving the First Two Years

Students reflect on their instruction and student learning during first years of teaching. Monthly meetings, observations, online discussion. Classroom management, planning, inquiry-based teaching, assessment, equity in the classroom.

Fall 2009: CI 5540—Special Topics: Science Education

Detailed examination and practice of the teaching of one area of science (e.g. geology, health, physical science) or one method of instruction (e.g. laboratories, demonstrations, Internet, simulations).

Fall 2009: CI 5596—Clinical Experience in Middle School Science

Supervised clinical experience in middle school science teaching.

Fall 2009: CI 8570—Advanced Topics in Science Education

Examination and critique of current research topics, methods, and issues.

Fall 2009: CI 8595—Problems: Science Education

Independent research.
