CEED Staff presented at BUILD National Conference on Family, Friend and Neighbor Care, Minneapolis, MN, September 21-22, 2009

CEED staff participated in the BUILD National Conference on Family, Friend and Neighbor Care that took place on September 21-22 in Minneapolis. Amy Susman-Stillman, CEED Interim Co-Director and PI on the Minnesota FFN Grant Program Evaluation and the Sharing the Wisdom Family, Friend and Neighbor Project, spoke at the session entitled Family, Friend and Neighbor Care and the Early Childhood Agenda, and Jennifer Cleveland, Coordinator for the Sharing the Wisdom FFN Project, attended the conference. Amy also spoke at the Childhood Injury Summit sponsored by Minnesota Safety Council. Her talk, Parents, Kids and Injury Prevention, focused on the family and developmental factors that affect parents' beliefs and attitudes regarding childhood injury prevention. In addition, Amy is now a member of the Early Learning Standards Committee of the Governor's Early Childhood Advisory Council (ECAC). The committee has met 4 times and is now offering its recommendations to the ECAC.

Congratulations to CEED staff who won awards at the Division of Early Childhood (DEC) Conference held in Minneapolis in 2008.


Scott McConnell received the Mary McEvoy Service to the Field Award. This award is given to a parent, community member, or professional who has made notable and significant national or international contributions to the field of early childhood special education. Read more on the CEHD web site.

  Karen Cadigan received the J. David Sexton Doctoral Student Award. This award is given to a DEC member and doctoral-level student whose contributions include research, higher education, publications, policy, and information dissemination.

CEED is pleased to announce the Assessment and Training Center (ATC). The Center has been conceptualized as a way to transmit CEED’s unique observation and assessment skill and knowledge to the greater early childhood community, for program evaluation and improvement purposes.

December 27, 2007 Marti Erickson, senior fellow at CEED, advises parents not to focus solely on the so-called "terrible twos" when raising toddlers. Arthur Reynolds, CEED Fellow, is also featured concerning his work in preschool intervention and the Chicago Public Schools preschool program.

~ Fall 2007 ~

CEED moved into the new Education Sciences Building on October 22, 2007

Mineral Resources BuildingCEED, along with the Department of Educational Psychology and the Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvement (CAREI) moved into the new Education Sciences Building.

CEED is located on the ground level, facing the river and next to the coffee shop.

The old Mineral Resources Research Center on River Road was renovated for this purpose. This building is where the process for refining taconite was invented and the slogan for refurbishing the building for CEHD purposes has been Mines to Minds.

Distinguished Scholar Lecture

Science, Practice and Sound Bites: Possibilities and Perils in Taking Psychology Public

This presentation helped participants increase awareness of popular misconceptions about attachment theory and research and their application to practice, policy and parenting; helped increase understanding of challenges presented when the cultures of academia, public policy, and media intersect; and guided participants in identifying current opportunities and strategies for using developmental theory and research to advance public knowledge and sound practice and policy.

Arthur Reynolds and Judy Temple are among the co-authors of this article:

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently highlighted the results of a 19 year follow-up study that looked at the long-term effects of the Child-Parent Center (CPC) program. The CPC program provided intensive instruction from pre-school through 3rd grade for children and job skills training, parenting skills training, educational classes and social services for their parents. Findings provide evidence that early education programs can have a wide range of positive effects into adulthood. Read the full press release

The Other End of University Avenue: Growing a University-Capitol Relationship to Improve Public Policies for Children and Families

This poster describes a variety of formal College-based activities that aim to build relationships between and among policymakers and the University community. Projects include the Children, Youth and Families Consortium policy work, the McEvoy Lectures on Early Childhood and Public Policy, the Family Policy Forum, the Early Childhood Caucus Leadership retreat, and recent data from a survey of state legislators' views of the University and research.

Arthur Reynolds is a CEED Fellow and directs the Chicago Longitudinal Study, which investigates the impact of the Child-Parent Center early education program. He is a professor of child development at the University of Minnesota.
