Supporting Stressed Young Children Through Relationship-based Teaching
This course is designed for early childhood and special education educators who are working with challenging children in preschool, child care, and early intervention settings. The course is taught using case studies and team processing for problem solving. Students will learn how relationships with caring adults are the context of all growth and learning for young children. The course will explore how to use the tools of "reflective teaching" and "reflective collaboration" to better understand young children in their classes, as well as what intervention approaches might work for children who are having difficulties.
The course is divided into eight learning modules:
Module 1: Early Attachment Relationships and Infant Mental Health
Module 2: Child-Teacher Attachment
Module 3: Tools for Relationship-based/Emotionally Responsive Practice
Module 4: Children with Challenging Behavior--Child/Teacher/Setting Match, Stress Response Continuum
Module 5: Children with Challenging Behavior--Aggression, Behaviors Related to Trauma, Supporting Peers
Module 6: Children with Challenging Behavior: Emotional Overwhelm, Testing, Neglected Children
Module 7: Reflective Teaching and Reflective Collaboration
Module 8: Special Populations of Children

Julie Nelson, Instructor
Julie Nelson is currently an Early Childhood Teacher working on the Families
Together Program at Life Track Resources, which is a therapeutic preschool for
traumatized children. She has a B.A. in psychology from St. Olaf College and has
completed level two child abuse prevention studies at the University of
Minnesota. She is also the author of several books, Families change: A book for
children experiencing termination of parental rights and Kids need to be safe (Free
Spirit Press).
