Movement IGDIs

Development and Validation of Functional Movement Skills for Young Children with Disabilities

(Movement Individual Growth and Development Indicators)

Movement Together with the Center for Early Education and Development (CEED) and the School of Kinesiology, a tool was developed to assess infant/toddler and preschooler movement. Using this tool, a non-movement expert can monitor young children's developmental skill in movement frequently in a quick and easy manner. In our research, the tool was employed every three weeks and we could identify children who were on a positive developmental trajectory as well as those who needed intervention. We have two tools: an Infant/Toddler Movement IGDI and a Preschooler Movement IGDI. Our tools are highly correlated with a standard measure of motor development and statistically significant.

Active Learning Manual:
A Resource Guide for Designing and Implementing Developmentally Appropriate Movement Experiences for Young Children Ages 3 to 5 in Home, School, and Community Environments

The Active Learning Manual was created by a team of professionals in developmental adapted physical education with years and years of experience working with young children of all abilities in physical activity/education. It is a myth that children learn their motor skills by having access to recess. Instead, as with any academic area, physical activity/physical education is taught. This resource has everything any professional or parent would like to know about physical activity:

  • what skills are expected, what skills are taught,
  • how to sequence activity and lesson plans,
  • the content of a lesson (what to do first, middle, last), and
  • valuable community resources for extending the school learning into home and family life

CEED is proud to offer this resource. The "draft" statement that appears on each page of this manual is not a reflection of the document's accuracy; it is the result of personnel changes at the Minnesota Department of Education. It is a solid, developmentally appropriate document with information based on "best practice" in education, physical education, and special education.

This document was sponsored in part by the State DAPE Committee, Minnesota Department of Education.

Funding

This work was initiated under the Early Childhood Research Institute on Measuring Growth and Development (ECRI-MGD)  and completed under an Initial Career Award for Dr. Leitschuh from the United States Department of Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS).
