Dual Language and Immersion Certificate


Overview

The certificate in Dual Language and Immersion (DLI) Education is offered entirely online and is designed to prepare already licensed preK-12 educators to teach effectively in DLI classrooms. Program administrators and coordinators will also find the program relevant to their professional development. Specifically, this will help teachers who work in a setting in which a second language (world, second, indigenous, or heritage) is the vehicle to teach school subjects unrelated to language, such as math or science.

The program is currently serving Minnesota educators only due to grant funds. For practicing educators outside of Minnesota who are interested in the DLI certificate, please contact the faculty advisor, Diane Tedick.

This program is designed for educators in the following models of dual language and immersion education:

  • One-way world language immersion. Designed for language-majority students (English speakers in the U.S.) who learn the curriculum through a world language such as Mandarin or Spanish.
  • Two-way bilingual immersion. Designed for a combined student audience of language-minority (e.g., Spanish speakers) and language-majority (English speakers) students who learn the curriculum through both languages.
  • One-way developmental bilingual. In the U.S., typically designed for Spanish speakers to maintain Spanish and learn English.
  • Indigenous language immersion. Designed with the goal of revitalizing an endangered language and culture such as Ojibwe.

Curriculum

The program consists of three required courses (nine credits) and two electives (six credits).

Core curriculum topics include:

  • Foundations of DLI education
  • Curriculum development and assessment in DLI classrooms
  • Language-focused instructional practices for DLI classrooms

Master of Education

You can pursue the certificate alone or together with a related graduate degree such as the M.Ed./Professional Studies degree in Language Immersion Education or the M.A. in Second Language Education or Ph.D in Second Language Education

You will need to apply to both the certificate program and the master’s program and then work with your adviser to plan your coursework to meet both requirements simultaneously.

Admissions Information

Currently enrolled students: If you are enrolled in another program at the University, you need to apply to earn this certificate.

Application priority deadlines:

  • December 15 - Spring start
  • April 30 - Summer start
  • July 31- Fall start
