Doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) programs
One Ph.D. program in education, curriculum and instruction is offered in the department. Students may choose a major from one of ten tracks:

- Elementary education (Ph.D. applications are not currently being accepted)
- Those interested in elementary >eeducation can contact reading (literacy), science, soc studies and math content areas for more information on pursuing a degree in those areas with a focus on elementary education.

The Ph.D. program requires a minimum of 78 semester credits (including 24 thesis credits), with courses representing the major, research methodology, educational foundations, and a minor or supporting program. Students may apply coursework taken toward a master’s degree to the Ph.D. program, depending upon its applicability to the Ph.D. and its currency. The Ph.D. program involves extensive coursework, exams, the dissertation, and final defense of the dissertation. Although it is common for applicants to hold a master’s degree upon applying for the Ph.D. program, it is not required.
