Art education
The program in art education is multidimensional, focusing on
issues related to art curriculum, art instruction, assessment,
art teacher education, and policy studies. Students have
opportunities to conduct research in urban and suburban school
settings, in museum education programs, within the initial
teacher licensure program at the University, and in schools that
have implemented comprehensive, cumulative, visual arts
curricula. They can also focus their inquiry in the area of
staff development in the arts and on national and regional
guidelines for arts education.
Program faculty work closely with national, state, and local level art education initiatives, encouraging graduate students to collaborate in the development, analysis, and implementation of art-related programs.
Degree program information
- Ph.D.: for experienced professionals who want to develop advanced research, knowledge, and leadership skills in their chosen field
- M.A.: a research-based masters degree for individuals who want to develop research and teaching skills, and advanced knowledge in their chosen field
- M.Ed./initial licensure in art education: for individuals seeking licensure to teach in K-12 settings
- M.Ed./professional studies in art education: for licensed teachers and other professionals interested in gaining advanced knowledge and skills with specific emphasis in art education education
