Advising

FAQs about parent and family education programs

When should I meet with my adviser?

Arrange to meet with your primary faculty adviser early in your program to review program requirements and to plan your early coursework. Meet regularly throughout your program to keep your adviser informed of your progress and to assure you are creating a strong program plan. Meet again as you near completion of your coursework to discuss preparation for completion of your program and to be sure you understand the next steps.

Do I have more than one adviser?

Ph.D. and M.A. students may be co-advised. They are directed to further information on the advising relationship in the Graduate Studies Handbook.

M.Ed., licensure, and certificate students may have more than one adviser assigned to them when admitted to a program or multiple programs. Your faculty adviser will advise you on program requirements, coursework, and departmental processes. Your college adviser will advise you on college program application and admission procedures, change of student status, change of address, and college graduation and program completion processes. Your licensure adviser will advise you on the coursework and requirements you must complete to be recommended as a candidate for a teaching license by the state of Minnesota.

Who can advise me about scholarships, awards, and financial aid?

Unfortunately, very few scholarships, assistantships, or fellowships are available for students in Family, Youth, and Community programs. Start by reviewing financial aid basic information on One Stop. Check the College's scholarships and financial aid resources. Seek external sources of support and scholarships that may be offered by communities, non-profit organizations, foundations, and employers.

Where can I find out which courses are offered online?

In addition to the online courses in Family Education, courses offered by other units and departments can be found by searching the University of Minnesota's Digital Campus.

What is the policy on incomplete grades?
