General coursework requirements
The state of Minnesota established coursework requirements for those who wish to be licensed as parent and family educators. The University of Minnesota's coursework as outlined below meets those requirements. To learn more about the Board of Teacher Standards for licensure in this area, download Minnesota State Statutes 8710.2000 and 8710.3100. In addition to the specific courses, license applicants must hold a completed baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university before a license can be issued.

Program Requirements with approved content area courses
Family Education (FE) course number changes (FE to CI) effective January 2005.
Credits listed are in semester hours. The parent education requirements are listed below in the recommended order of completion. If you wish to take a specific course to fulfill one of the program requirements that is not listed below, you must submit a syllabus to Heather Cline at fyc@umn.edu for pre-approval. If you wish to apply coursework to a graduate degree, take 4000-level or higher offerings.
Minnesota Teacher Licensure Exams
(If you already hold a Minnesota teaching license, skip this step.) As of September 2010, the Minnesota Board of Teaching requires licensure applicants to pass the Minnesota Teacher Licensure Exams (MTLE) administered by Pearson. Before you begin your coursework, schedule a time to complete the MTLE Basic Skills Tests. These tests are offered several times a year; students are responsible for registering for and taking MTLEs by the required deadlines.
This basic competency exam includes sub-tests in Reading, Writing, and Math. Test information is available from MTLE or the Minnesota Department of Education. Use institutional code 6874 to have your scores submitted to the University of Minnesota. You will not be able to register for your second semester of coursework without scores reported for each content area. If you fail to pass one or more of the content areas, you may begin the program and retake the exam. Passing scores (240 or above) in all basic skills sub-tests are required for program completion.

Parent education practicum — online course (2 cr minimum)
- CI 5949—Student Teaching in Parent Education (2 cr)
- Note: Arrange for the practicum three months in advance (call 612-624-1294 to obtain information). CI 5943 and CI 5944 must be completed before enrolling in CI 5949—Student Teaching. Students may enroll in CI 5945 and CI 5946 concurrently with CI 5949 with permission of their faculty adviser.
Other requirements for the Minnesota teaching license
To obtain a Minnesota teaching license, the following are required by the state. These courses can be taken at any time throughout your program.
Human relations (4 cr minimum)
- EPSY 5135—Human Relations Workshop (4 cr)
Drug education (1 cr minimum)
- PUBH 6003—Fundamentals of Alcohol and Drug Abuse (1 cr - online)
If you already hold a Minnesota teaching license, or you are not interested in a Minnesota teaching license, EPSY 5135, PUBH 6003, and the Minnesota Teacher Licensure Exams (MTLE) are not required.
