Minnesota Teacher Licensure Examinations (MTLE)

On September 1, 2010, the Minnesota Board of Teaching launched a new generation of licensure tests, the Minnesota Teacher Licensure Examinations (MTLE).  The MTLE is the statewide uniform means of assessing the basic skills, pedagogical, and subject-area knowledge of Minnesota K-12 teacher candidates. It has replaced the Praxis tests previously used.

Registration information for MTLE testing on the MTLE Website.

Information about required MTLE tests is available on the MDE teacher testing requirements Web page.

Students seeking elementary licensure must pass the following MTLE tests. You will take the first of these as an undergraduate and the other two during the ILP.

  • MTLE Basic Skills Tests. Students must take this test before starting the licensure program. Official test scores must be submitted to Student Services before starting the program.
  • MTLE Content Area Test: Elementary Education (Grades K-6). This test is usually taken during the ILP.
  • MTLE Pedagogy Test: Elementary (Grades K-6). This test is usually taken during the ILP.

If you do not pass a test on your first try, you may retake it as many times as needed. You must wait 60 days before retaking a test.
