Dr. Ladson-Billings has been honored with numerous awards including:
- Kellner Family Chair in Urban Education
- Distinguished Service Medal, Teachers College, Columbia, New York
- Hilldale Award for Distinguished Professional Achievement, UW-Madison
- State of Wisconsin Martin Luther King, Jr. Heritage Award
- Elected as a Member of the National Academy of Education
She has published numerous articles and eight books. Her work examines what happens in classrooms between students and their teachers, and presses us to seek culturally relevant teaching as a means to help all individuals learn—educators and students alike. One particular area of her work focuses on preparing and sustaining teachers as they work in diverse settings with children and youth from varying backgrounds. Her work in the areas of critical race theory; issues of social justice, school funding, and the achievement gap inform her research methods and findings.
