Clinical Experiences Handbook
Introduction
Student teaching is the culminating experience of teacher
education, in which students truly become teachers and work to apply
all they have acquired from their college courses and practicum
experiences. During student teaching, it is important that student
teachers have opportunities to explore using varieties of
instructional methods, strategies, and assessments, and to carry out
the professional responsibilities required of a teacher. They also
need to spend time reflecting on their teaching experiences in order
to refine their professional practice. Therefore, it is essential
that they receive professional guidance and support from their
University instructors and supervisors in collaboration with their
cooperating teachers.
This handbook has been designed to support and complement the
process of practicum and student teaching. It contains general
information and guidelines for cooperating teachers, student
teachers, and University supervisors in all program areas. We trust
you will find this handbook useful as we work together to educate
the children, youth, and future educators of Minnesota.
As we continue to accommodate the changes in the college’s
programs and Minnesota licensure requirements, there will be
periodic revisions of this handbook. Therefore, we welcome your
comments regarding needed additions or modifications.
This handbook along with program area supplements, cooperating
teacher orientation, and contact information, and other materials
are available online.
