CRDEUL

As the new editor of the CRDEUL Center Points, I'm pleased to begin by announcing the contest winners who attended the September 2004 CRDEUL Forum/Grand Re-Opening of the CRDEUL Library and Resource Center on September 28. We had a great turnout and a lively gathering in our new offices. (Too lively for some in the building I was told!) The contests involved the visual-mathematical puzzle of guessing how many pieces of candy were held in two glass jars. In contest one, the autumn mix candy, the total was 574 pieces; the winner was GC math instructor Len Mrachek who guessed 576. Truly an incredible guess! In contest two, the M&M candy, there were 486 M&Ms in the jar. The winner was Shani Greene of Upward Bound, who guessed 475. I don't know how these folks did it. Maybe they ate a lot of candy when they were kids?
There were multiple door prize winners, each receiving treasures brought from the far lands of the newly opened Twin Cities IKEA: blue mug, Mary Ellen Shaw; tea light holder, Marlene Parkhurst; shoehorn for snow boots, Fran Stark; bag of decorative rocks, Katie Hutton; pencil set with ruler and eraser, Emily Goff; pocket journal, Annia Fayon; colored pencils, Diane Wartchow; spiral pocket notebook, Julie Duret; giant carry-all bag, Karen Bencke; set of 10 chop sticks, Olatokunbo Fashoyin; foam beverage cooler and stress truck, Randy Moore; and the grand prize winner of the lovely throw rug was Heidi Barajas.
Now, for a little information about your new Center Points
editor. I started my job at CRDEUL at the end of June, after working for many years at the University of Minnesota in other departments. It's been interesting and rewarding working for the Institute of Technology and the Academic Health Center (AHC); however, I worked for General College for several years back in the 1980s and have looked forward to returning to a place that always felt a little more human and a lot more interested in its students.
In my previous positions I worked for the Institute for Mathematics and Its Applications, the Army High Performance Computing Research Center , the AHC Provost's Office in the Fairview/University Hospitals merger, the AHC Human Resources and Facilities Management office, and the A.L.R.T. Center medical cluster, which managed four different medical disciplines within the Medical School & University Hospital . After such a list, returning to a college that has such a solid focus on students and teaching has been a refreshing change for me. I look forward to many pleasant years of working as CRDEUL's program associate and as editor of the
CRDEUL Center Points . Thanks for reading.
